This Covenant of Love is a work in progress, although the actual Covenant of Love is complete in Christ. Ever since covenant theology unfolded from God’s Word I have been fascinated with the richness of this Scriptural theme. The Covenant of Love is a thread that winds in and out of the Bible, linking revelation with redemption, and binding God’s plan from creation to the new creation.
This poem is written for the ten people who will read it, for the three who will like it, and for that rare individual who will read it again and possibly recite it to others.
If Jesus should tarry in His Second Coming, I can envision that one day a spaceship with a colony of earthlings will read this poem and worship God as they remember earth in search of a new home in the stars.
For those who hate God and react violently to these words, I beseech you to examine your hearts and root out the cause of your hatred of Him who made you and loves you. I would point you to Jesus Christ, who died for the sins of the world and rose from the dead to reconcile us to our Creator and give us an abundant and eternal new life.
My greatest joy would be to hear a reader call out to God after reading this poem:
“Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.”
This prayer, learned as a child and recited weekly in church, is a model for prayer taught by Christ to his disciples. The Lord’s Prayer encapsulates the Covenant of Love and provides a stairway to heaven.
It’s important to stress that what you are reading is a devotional poem, and decidedly not revelation. Inspired by the Word of God, seeking to understand and interpret Holy Scriptures, this poem is a sermon speaking timeless truth in a cross between traditional and modern idioms. This poem declares God’s praises and His sovereignty over all His creation. As science uncovers the wonders of the universe, God is glorified and His Word confirmed. As history unfolds God’s plan of redemption, Jesus Christ is glorified and His salvation extended to all nations and peoples. As philosophy seeks truth, the meaning of life, and the exercise of wisdom, the Holy Spirit reveals the covenant of love that binds God to man in eternal fellowship. Maranatha, Lord Jesus! Come soon!
